Germany Greets
2nd Female Rabbi
Please cjoh( S,ecaguese AT/Na
Berlin/JTA — Germany is about to
get its second female rabbi. Gesa Shira
Ederberg will be installed next month
as leader of the small Jewish commu-
nity of Weiden, in Bavaria.
Rabbi Ederberg, who converted to
Judaism several years ago and was
instrumental in establishing the egali-
tarian congregation now thriving in
Berlin, was ordained in January 2002
in Jerusalem after four years of study
at the Schechter Institute for Jewish
Studies, the Jewish Theological Semi-
nary of America's branch in Israel.
She now heads the Masorti Assoc-
iation for the Support of Jewish Edu-
cation and Jewish Life in Berlin.
Some 300 Jews live in Weiden
today; they worship in a 19th century
synagogue that survived the Holo-
caust.

Israel Elected
To U.N. Body
New York/JTA — Israel was elected to
a U.N. General Assembly body for the
first time in decades.
The General Assembly unanimously
chose an Israeli delegate as one of
three vice chairs serving on the Work-
ing Group on Disarmament, headed
by Indonesia.
Israel's candidacy was presented by
the Western European and Others
Group (WEOG), the regional group-
ing Israel joined in May 2000 after
years of being the only country exclu-
ded from one of the U.N.'s regional
groups.
"Israel's election marks an important
step toward ending the anomaly of
Israel's treatment at the U.N., whereby
Israel was the only member state ex-
cluded from actively participating in
the U.N. election process as a full and
equal member," said Israeli U.N. offi-
cial Arye Mekel.
