Weisman, of Ann Arbor, honored
for starting and enlarging the Family
Book Club, is a former Head Start
teacher who promotes programs that
have low-income parents reading to
preschoolers. One initiative gives
prisoners an opportunity to record
specific books and then sends the
tapes and the new books to the chil-
dren of those prisoners.
"I'm glad to say that our organiza-
tion has received lots of awards," says
Weisman, president of the club that
has distributed thousands of books to
adults as well as children. "We like
getting the awards because they bring
attention to our fund-raising pro-
