ombine glitz, glam and a diva. Mix it with luxury, muscle and nostalgia.
The ingredients equal one snazzy event — the North American
International Auto Show Charity Preview. More than 17,500 patrons
attended the extravaganza, held the evening before the auto show
opened to the public, to raise more than $6 million for 11 metro Detroit children's
charities.
There were many stars that evening. First and foremost was diva Celine Dion,
who performed on behalf of -DaimlerChrysler. Dion sang three songs including the
Oscar-winning "My Heart Will Go On." The fashions were dazzling as the patrons
all wore black-tie garb. Of course, black was basic, but most of the gowns were
slinky, sleek and glittering. Women in red stood out and looked every bit as glam-
orous. Many men became creative with metallic neckties and printed bow ties. As
for the automobiles, luxury and performance reign. Due out in 2004, the Pontiac's
GTO muscle car is back along with an updated Ford Mustang and a Dodge
Durango. Look for the new Cadillac SRX, a cross between a sedan, SUV and a sta-
tion wagon. As always, crowds gathered around Rolls Royce, Ferrari and Jaguar.
Yes, the weather was cold, but the evening was hot.
