"I'm a first-grade room mom -- for
Jackson — this year at my kids'
school," she explains. "The [TV] job's
perfect because I don't have to be at
work until 10 a.m. and I'm home by 4
p.m. three days out of five.
'And there's very little pressure [in
my school job], as it only entails
arranging holiday parties and occa-
sional field trips."
Although she made a very good liv-
ing during the extraordinary
Married... With Children run, Sagal
insists that she has to work in order to
pay for the house in the hills, the
Mercedes-Benz in the driveway and
her children's education.
"Besides, I love to work," she says
emphatically. "I'm a better everything
when I work — a better mom, a bet-
ter person, a better girlfriend."

Close To Family

Born in Hollywood and raised in Los
Angeles by show business parents,
Sagal never doubted what she would
do for a living — only how long it
would take her to get there.
And there were several tragic twists
and turns along the way: Sagal was still
a teenager when her mother,
singer/writer/director Sara Zwilling,
suddenly died at the age of 47 in 1975.
A few years later, in 1981, her
father, noted director Boris Sagal —
a Russian-born Jew — was struck
and killed by a helicopter rotor blade

while working on the Rock Hudson
miniseries World War III.
Mostly working in TV, he directed
such miniseries as Rich Man, Poor
Man and Masada, about the Jewish
revolt against the Romans.
Katey Sagal sometimes resorted to
drugs and alcohol in order to cope
with the pain, but she always shoul-
dered her responsibility to raise and
guide her four younger siblings.
There were times when it seemed
like an impossible task, particularly
when she was on the road as a backup
singer for Bette Midler (she was one of
the Harlettes), Etta James and Bob
Dylan. Her musical career also includ-
ed a stint playing bass backup on a
Gene Simmons (of KISS fame) album.
Sagal remains close to her family.
"My sisters, Liz and Jean (former
Wrigley gum commercial twins), have
left acting to become a screenwriter
and a camera coordinator, respectively.
Brother Dave is an entertainment
lawyer at Warner Bros.; Joe is an actor.
"The only thing that could make
me happier at this point is doing more
original Futurama episodes," she con-
tinues, sighing.
"The network is airing 16 new
episodes left over from previous seasons,
but haven't picked up new ones." ❑
