Jerusalem/JTA — An Israeli Arab law-
maker warned of repercussions after
Israel demolished a mosque in a
Bedouin village in the Negev.
Because the village is unrecognized
by state authorities, no construction is
allowed in it, and the building was
declared illegal, according to the Israeli
daily Ha'aretz. Legislator Talab El-Sana
called the demolition "very severe and
dangerous," adding that it "could lead
to a public uprising."

Gypsies Suing
IBM Corp.

Lucerne/JTA — A Swiss court- opened
the way for hearings on a lawsuit
brought by Gypsy groups charging
that IBM created technology that
helped the Nazis.
"We want our people to taste jus-
tice," a Gypsy leader told the New

York Times.

The lawsuit is largely based on a
book by Edwin Black, IBM and the
Holocaust, which argues that the com-
pany provided the punch cards and
computers that allowed Nazi Germany
to organize the extermination of Jews,
Gypsies and other groups. An IBM
executive told the newspaper that the
Gypsies' $12 billion lawsuit is without
merit.

TOUGH oN DR r. GENTLE ON CARPE

Jerusalem/JTA — Recent rains boost-
ed the level of the Sea of Galilee by
eight inches in a 24-hour period.
Since the start of the rainy season,
the level of Israel's main reservoir has
risen by more than one yard. But
experts say that the level is still more
than four yards shy of its emergency-
low level.

Umpire Can't Work
At Fantasy Camp

Los Angeles/JTA — A baseball umpire
has been hit with a second punishment
after making an anti-Semitic remark
about an umpiring administrator.
Suspended for 10 days without pay
for the derogatory comment, Bruce
Froemming was told to stay away
from the Los Angeles Dodgers' adult

baseball camp that begins in Vero
Beach, Fla. Last week, Froemming
called umpires administrator Cathy
Davis a "stupid Jew bitch" after
Froemming was chastised for not
allowing the league to handle his travel
arrangements for an umpiring trip to
Japan. Froemming later apologized.

Lanner Abuse
Cover-Up Charged

New York/JTA — Critics of convicted
sex abuser Rabbi Baruch Lanner
charge that a Yeshiva University leader
hid evidence of the abuse.
Nineteen of Lanner's alleged victims
and their families said Rabbi Morde-
chai Willig hid evidence of Rabbi
Lanner's abuse for more than a decade,
after a rabbinical court that Rabbi
Willig belonged to determined in
1989 that Rabbi Lanner was abusing
youths, the Forward newspaper report-
ed.
An Orthodox Union commission in
2000 received evidence of alleged sex-
ual misconduct involving women and
teen-age girls, as well as physical abuse
of boys and girls by Rabbi Lanner,
who headed the O.U.'s National
Conference of Synagogue Youth.
Rabbi Willig, now head of the
Wexner Kollel Elyon, an arm of Y.U.'s
Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological
Seminary, denied the cover-up allega-
tions.
The Forward also reported that
Harvard University law professor Alan
Dershowitz has been helpingRabbi
Lanner's defense team.

JDL Member
Pleads Guilty

Los Angeles/JTA — A member of the
Jewish Defense League pleaded guilty
to conspiring to blow up a mosque
and the offices of a congressman of
Lebanese descent.
Under terms of the plea bargain, 60-
year-old Earl Krugel faces 10 to 20
years in prison, instead of a mandatory
40 years if he had been convicted.
Krugel was second in command to
the JDL's national chairman, Iry
Rubin, who was indicted on the same
charges, but died last November after
apparently committing suicide at a
federal detention center in Los
Angeles. If Krugel's trial had gone for-
ward, he was expected to defend him-
self by claiming entrapment by an FBI
informant.
However, in a statement filed in
