Ask The Orthodontist

Is there a chance my child's bite will
get better on its own?

Very unlikely! We have rarely heard about a child's bite
improving as the child ages. Just the opposite, if you wait,
orthodontic problems will almost always get worse. If a few
teeth are crooked or crowded, the orthodontist can realign the
crowded teeth relatively easily. However, if you do not treat
the crowding soon, the crooked teeth will encroach onto your
child's other teeth and push other teeth out of alignment too.

usually get worse.
Further, as your child gets older, orthodontic treatment becomes more complicat-
ed. As your child ages, fibers grow to anchor your child's teeth to your child's
jaw. It takes more force to move the fibers as your child ages so treatment is more
uncomfortable. Also the bones in the roof of their mouth harden as your child
ages, which makes treatment more difficult.
If you avoid needed treatment when your children are teens, the children will
usually need more involved treatment later in life. Isn't it better to take care of
problems when first discovered rather than waiting until the problem gets
worse?

Weddings

SEIM-GETZ

lissa Nell Getz and John
•Michael Seim were recently
married at the Birmingham
Community House. Rabbi
Sherwin Wine of the Birmingham
Temple officiated.
Alissa is the daughter of Nancy Jean
Grossman of Walled Lake and the late
Arnold Grossman and Gilbert Getz of
Royal Oak. John is the son of Phyllis
Seim of Ames, Iowa, and the late
Emerson Seim.
The couple were particularly hon-
ored to have their grandmothers
Eileen Israel of West Bloomfield and
Cecelia Morse of Ames share in their
celebration. After honeymooning on
Maui, the couple returned to reside in
Chicago.

This is why we recommend a child have their 1st orthodontic exam at eight years
of age. In this way, if there is a skeletal discrepancy, treatment may begin, or at
least an oral exam recorded so that the orthodontist can check yearly to have an
idea of growth direction, and the speed at which teeth are developing. At least,
an exam should be performed when your child reaches double digits (age 10).
This allows the orthodontist to determine the ideal time to begin your child's
treatment.
