Recently other synagogues have expressed an interest in sponsoring an activity as well. "These group activities help make a mentor pro- gram stronger because it allows for the mentors and the kids to get to know one another better. It also shows the kids that they are not alone," Greenstein said. Most of the boys in the program have never seen their fathers and lack a male role model. Many of the_ girls have low self-esteem, depression or are at-risk of making poor choices later in life. JFS social workers train the volun- teers and support them throughout the relationship with their kids. Support also is offered to the parents and guardians of the children, such as parenting classes and counseling. The CONNECT program has 12 mentor-youth matches, but more mentors are needed. Business Drives - Warm Homeless 1/31 2003 38 Homeless shelters in Pontiac and Detroit were the beneficiaries of holiday drives held by two Jewish-owned busi- nesses. Ceresnie & Offen Furs of Birmingham delivered warm hats, gloves and mittens collected by employees and customers to the Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS) in Detroit. "It's always important to help those in need," said co-owner Mike Ceresnie. "The kids in the childcare area were excited to model their winter wear," said Beth McKeown, a COTS manager. Southfield-based LoanGiant.com donated 200 blankets and employees donated $700 worth of canned goods as gestures of support of Grace Centers of Hope, formerly the Pontiac Rescue Mission. "We usually help homeowners, so it was a wonderful turn of events that allowed us to help some people 'who don't have any home at all," said Andy Jacob, president of the online mortgage lender.
