WHILE HE WAS A waiter at
Darbys on Seven Mile and Wyoming
in the early 1960s, Richard Bender,
hubby of Hazel Bender, collection
analyst at the Jewish News, remembers
the very strict dress code that owner
Sam Boesky, enforced.
No woman, recalls Richard, regard-
less of who she was, could sit in the
dining room wearing slacks ... The
coffee shop only.
This was true for the many wonder-
ful females who made Darbys a "must"
when playing Detioit ... If casual
wearing slacks, they were asked to the
coffee shop ... and knew better next •
time ... coming in wearing dresses.
In fact, says Richard, after the first
no-no, the entertainer would call oth-
ers who were visiting here to tell them
not to wear slacks if going to Darbys.
Men couldn't sit in the dining room
or Skylight Room, where cocktails
were served and Charlie Dubin was at
the piano, wearing jeans or no jacket
... No jeans and a)acket in the
Skylight Room were definite require-
ments by Sam.
