Jewish Roots

Goldblum and his three siblings were
born on the outskirts of Pittsburgh to a
homemaker mother and a physician
father, and grew up in what he
described in one interview as "a close-
knit Jewish family."
He became interested in acting in
high school and continued his educa-
tion with a two-year program with
Sanford Meisner at the famed
Neighborhood Playhouse in New York
City.
Halfway through the course, an acci-
dent inadvertently launched his feature
film career.
He was appearing in El Grande de
Coca-Cola at New York's Mercer Art
Center when the hotel above the the-
ater sudden collapsed, crushing and
killing several people about one hour
before the show.
The production reopened a week
later at the Plaza Hotel, which was
located across the street from the hotel

where director Robert Altman and his
casting director were staying at the
time.
"A tremendous blizzard prevented
them from attending a Broadway show
one night, so they ducked into our the-
ater instead," Goldblum recalls. "They
liked what they saw and hired me for
California Split (1974) — pure luck."
Only weeks later he was hired for
Death Wish as one of three thugs who
rape and kill the wife and daughter of
Charles Bronson's one-man vigilante
hero.
Now single, Goldblum has been mar-
ried to two actresses, Patricia Gaul and
Geena Davis. Both marriages ended in
divorce and Goldblum has remained
single for 12 years, though he was
engaged to Laura Dern (whom he met
when they were filming Jurassic Park)
for four years.
"Since then I've learned not to talk
about my personal life," he said. "It's
something I always keep outside the
show. Please forgive me." ❑
