Although the characters are loosely based
on the Bennett daughters in "Pride and
Prejudice," Cohen says you don't have to
be familiar with Austen's classic novel to
enjoy her story.

"I loved Austen's wonderful writing,
sense of humor, and the fact that
everything ends up happily and people
get paired off," says Cohen, who
earned an undergraduate degree at
Yale and a Ph.D. from Columbia
University, where she wrote her doc-
toral dissertation on Austen.
A native of New Jersey, Cohen
dreamed of becoming a writer since
she was a young girl. "I tried writing
fiction in high school and college, but
didn't get anywhere, so I became a lit-
erary critic," says the author.
After graduation, she taught at
Columbia University and the New
School in New York, and wrote essays
for literary journals and reviews for the
Philadelphia Enquirer.
"I put the dream of fiction-writing
behind me," she notes.
But after reading that author Judith
Krantz wrote her first novel at age 47,
Cohen, also 47, became inspired, espe-
cially after her visit to Boca.
"So my childhood dream came
true," says Cohen, who has been an
English professor at Drexel University
in Philadelphia for 20 years. "Within a
few months, Jane Austen in Boca was
complete."
Cohen, who has been married for
20 years to oncologist Alan Penziner
and has a teenage son and daughter, is
working on a new book.
"This one takes place in New Jersey
and has to do with planning a bat
mitzvah," she says. "Of course, it has
another Jewish theme."
