FINE CHINESE DINING
9attue,s, Tow
Za,
'A wondeful adventure in fine dining" - Danny Raskin
Orchestra. Foreign tours have included
appearances in Israel, most recently at
the Red Sea Jazz Festival.
Mature For His Years
"It's amazing to travel halfway around
the world and share the enjoyment of
this music," says Jaffe, who has spent
lots of social time at the New Orleans
Jewish community center. Two of the
band's African-American players prac-
tice Judaism.
"The music appeals to.audiences of
all races and ages. We see people.clap-
ping their hands and tapping their
feet. We recently noticed a baby, who
couldn't have been more than 2 years
old, bouncing, clapping and gyrating
to the music. I think it's all part of the
infectious nature of what we play."
Jaffe, married this past summer to a
Tulane University graduate student
studying Latin American culture,
always has felt his state of mind was
way beyond his actual age. He relates
easily to the other band members who
are decades older.
"I've always been more mature for
my years, and even when I was a
teenager, I felt I Was embodying a
much older soul," says Jaffe, who also
scores films and currently is working
on a documentary about New Orleans
debutantes. "I think that's because I
grew up around older musicians in a
very old city with a very old soul."
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band,
which has been 'featured on a televi-
sion documentary, has established its
own recording label. Besides reissuing
earlier recordings, the group has added
a new CD, Songs of New Orleans, with
favorites "Tiger Rag" and "A Closer
Walk With Thee." Another CD, to be
released next summer, is in the works.
Jaffe, who teaches at the New
Orleans Center for Creative Arts, a
magnet high school, has vowed to
keep the band an independent enter-
prise. His brother, an attorney, some-
times assists with the business.
"My parents always taught me not
to compromise the music," Jaffe says.
"As long as there are musicians playing
New Orleans jazz and as long as there
are interested and willing audiences, I
want to run Preservation Hall."
