THE PLACE
To BE from page 71
Robert Stewart of Southfield
came to the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit with a simple wish. "I want to do
something positive for the future of Israel,"
he explained, - What better way than to
establish a college scholarship fund for Israeli
teens and post-army students in ned? -
That desire has since turned into reality in name
and deed in the Robert A. Stewart Endowed
Israel Scholarship Fund in memory of Joe
and Dorothy Stewart. This
fund is part of the Millennium Campaign for
Detroit's Jewish Future. a response to the
growing needs of students in Israel, sponsored
by the Jewish Federation and United Jewish
Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit.
Mr. Stewart's $1 million Millennium gift to
build the future of Israel is one of hope and
promise to rebuild the dream of a land that
is in turmoil and desperate need today.
It couldn't be more appropriate or come
at a better time.
Even if Mr. Stewart never meets a single one of
his beneficiaries his legacy will live in the
hearts and minds of promising college students,
interested in computer science, technology and
cultural arts.
Our community can be grateful for Mr.
Stewart's vision, his passion and generosity
THANKS A MILLENNIUM.

Witnessing the singing of the Toldos
Avrahom Yitzchok and the Gerrer
Chassidim was something truly
powerful and something some of us
had never experienced.
We had the delight of meeting
with two senior rosh yeshivot (yeshi-
va deans). Meeting with Rabbi
Yitzchok Scheiner, the rosh yeshiva
of Kaminetz, who is an American-
born public school student from
Pittsburgh, and Rabbi Nosson Tzvi
Finkel, dean of the Mirrer Yeshiva,
also American born from Chicago,
will forever remain a highlight of
my Israel experience.
I am forever thankful to my par-
ents, my siblings, Yeshivat Akiva in
Southfield and NCSY for providing
me with the foundation and encour-
agement to benefit from this experi-
ence. I urge all students considering
a trip to Israel for the summer or for
the next school year not to allow the
situation in Israel to keep them
from their home and, most impor-
tantly, from their birthright. ❑
