It is an outrage that the Michigan Jewish
community no longer observes Jewish
Heritage Week (last observed in the
spring of 1999). It was celebrated for
four years with wonderful exhibits in
libraries and schools in Oakland County
as well as by Jewish agencies, schools and
organizations.
The Agency for Jewish Education of
Metropolitan Detroit, under Rabbi
Judah Isaacs, helped spread a wonderful
concept for Jewish children to learn and
know about the fabulous contributions
Jewish people have made to America
and the world.
Excellent materials for the exhibits are
available from the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit. I urge everyone to .
contact the Federation to place this holi-
day on the annual calendar for the total
community. A presidential proclamation
will designate May 4-11 as Jewish
Heritage Week nationally.

Dr. King's Legacy
Resonates Locally

men and women and children, black

Gentiles. All braved the bitter January
cold as they walked the traditional mile
and a half of Orchard Lake ROad from
the West Bloomfield High School to the
corner of Walnut Lake Road.
They walked together in celebration
of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. And despite the unusual arctic
Southfield cold, the participation did not decrease;
it perhaps even grew, all eager to attend
the walk and the rest of the program, a
bit new and even improved this year.

ipants wore with pride proclaimed the
