he dot-corn boom may have
gone bust, but Edgar
Bronfman, the billionaire
president of the World
Jewish Congress, still believes the
Internet will help save the Jewish people.
Bronfman and fellow philanthropist
Lynn Schusterman, of the Charles and
Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation,
have put more than $2 million into a
new nonprofit Jewish supersite called
MyJewishLearning.com .
"I think this may be the most impor-
tant gift I've ever given the Jewish
world," Bronfman says.
The site's co-producers are Yosef
Abramowitz, of the multimedia pub-
lishing firm Jewish Family & Life, and
David Gordis, president of Hebrew
College of Brookline, Mass.
Bronfman said he already has given
$1.5 million and may give more of the
three-year, $3-million budget.
Schusterman, a member of the Jewish

Telegraphic Agency board of directors,
has committed up to $750,000. The two
are seeking additional major backers.
"Edgar and Lynn were crystal-clear:
Nobody has any concern about funding
for this project," said Harry Bloom,
managing director of the site.
Behind the mega-philanthropists'
investment lies an undeniably ambitious
goal: to create the most comprehensive
and accessible Jewish presence online.
Back in the early days of the Internet,
when the digital scene had few Jewish
sites, that would have been a simpler
task. Now, even after the dot-corn col-
lapse, the Web is rich with Jewish sites.
Many are learning sites launched by
religious groups that joined the early
rush online. Among the more visible are
Aish HaTorah's aish.com , which offers
everything from Torah learning to
Holocaust studies, and Torah.org ,
which offers what it calls "common-
denominator Judaism."
There are also Jewish news-magazine
sites, such as the tabloid-flavored
USAJewish.com news site or the fea-

MyfewishLearnzng.corn offers many creative
features to get excited about.

ust as the snow begins to
fly, true surfers hunker
down in front of their
trusty monitors, and
scoff at the weather. (This
works when it's hot out-
side, raining, you name it
... an addict is an addict!)
Who would consider running to
the mall, for example, when you can
shop at home and avoid. the crowds
and maybe sales tax, too? And why
would you go dashing through the
snow to visit the library when com-
prehensive resources like the brand-
new MyJewishLearning.com are at
home and at your fingertips? So let's
visit a Jewish library and laugh at
the weather.

Billed as the "personal gateway to
Jewish exploration,"
MyJewishLearning.com was
launched in November, timed to
coincide with the Chanukah season
as a symbolic gift of knowledge.
This very attractive, very sophis-
ticated, very user-friendly,
very large Web site is a
project of the Samuel
Bronfman Foundation and the
Charles and Lynn Shusterman
Family Foundation. Co-produced
by Hebrew College and Jewish
Family and Life, there are no annoy-
ing pop-up ads here, nor is there a
store. Instead, you visit a library
whose doors are always open.
When you arrive at the homepage,
go ahead and join at no cost. You'll
be able to make use of a feature
called "My Journal," allowing you
