This year's festival runs nvo nights, Friday-Saturday, Jan 24-25, at Ann Arbor's Michigan Theater, as Hill Auditorium undergoes renovations. The music event benefits The Ark, Ann Arbor's nonprofit venue for folk, roots and ethnic music. Friday's performances, beginning at 7 p.m., feature headliner Patty Griffin and a host of artists who bring a pro- gressive sound to the folk music scene. Saturday, headlined by Taj Mahal, will showcase styles well known to folk and roots audiences,. in keeping with past versions of the festival. Fink and Marxer, instrumentalists and singers with a sense of humor about themselves, will be part of the second-day lineup. "Marcy and I mostly will be doing songs from Postcards," says Fink, who has performed various times for The Ark over the past 12 years. "That album is very eclectic, and it includes traditional and contemporary folk music as well as swing. - "We play lots of different kinds of music because we have approached our shows playing music we really like. We find threads that help us tie differ- ent styles together." The song about abuse, "Survivors of the Storm," was written by Fink and folk legend Tom Paxton. It is based on stories. Fink heard as co-founder and board chair of a program that teaches children how not to be victims of assault. In contrast, a performer the duo met while touring touring Australia penned "Here Is the which makes fun of entertainers. Also on Postcards is "It's the Girl," a 1940s jazz favorite that contrasts with "Birds and Ships," a tune with Woody Guthrie lyrics and music written by Billy Bragg after Guthrie's death.
