Freelance Curator "I learned about the design artists through my background as a free- lance curator, the schools I attended and the portfolios received at the gallery," says Sklar, who earned a bachelor's degree in fashion design and merchandising from Wayne State University and currently is working toward a master's degree in apparel, textiles and merchandising. "I was picked to work on the "Design Show" after organizing a special event at Wayne State University." Sklar, who lives in an avant-garde loft in Detroit with Web designer and musi- cian Harlo internships during a summer in New York. It was great fun working in the art section at George magazine, where John Kennedy Jr. circulated among us, and assisting with the wardrobe for Comedy Central." Sklar, who also helped with an inde- pendent film while in New York and has done some fashion writing in Detroit, says her combination of different experi- ences has had a major impact on her. She believes it even could be in her genes. Her great-aunt, the late Tavy Stone, was a longtime Detroit fash- ion writer, while relatives in New Jersey owned a textile mill. "I fell in love with Erte-designed paper dolls when I was a small child," says Sklar, who grew up in Southfield and Farmington Hills and attended religious classes at Congregation B'nai Moshe and Adat Shalom Synagogue. "When I was a junior in college, I did the clothes styling for bands — and that's how I met Harlo, who became my boyfriend. "I was lucky enough to get two When she completes her stud- ies, she would like to work for a museum — which means she'll probably have to move to another city to find job opportunities. "I think it's important to showcase new artists," says Sklar, a lifetime Hadassah member who wears a hamsa necklace she bought while traveling in Israel last year. "The Detroit Artists Market is a great gallery for that, especially because of its educational outreach." To promote fashion education, Sklar_will be moderating a free panel discussion with the designers at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23. "It's been very nice getting to know these artists;" says Sklar, who shops resale stores to dress herself and enjoys the fantasy of retro when the occasions are right.
