Sobel starts with photography, some
stills from video work, and manipu-
lates them on the screen. After print-
ing on a variety of papers, she uses col-
lage techniques.
"I use the computer to let me merge
and manipulate ideas in ways I could not
do with traditional media alone," says
Sobel, whose works have been exhibited
at the Washington Street Gallery in Ann
Arbor, Scarab Club in Detroit and the
Buckham Gallery in Flint.
"I integrate drawing, painting and
printmaking with the computer images
because I find an enormous physical
and emotional relationship with the
tactility of paint and the physicality of
making marks on paper."

Judith Jacobs, a member of Art
Alchemists, will be showing seven dig-
ital prints, and they vary in subject
matter.
"I come to digital art from a collage
artist's background," says Jacobs, who
earned a bachelor's degree in design
from the University of Michigan
School of Architecture and Design and
has exhibited her works on paper for
more than 35 years.
"Instead of composing with dis-
parate papers as I did in the past, I
scan these papers, place them in layers
with software and then combine,
manipulate and recombine the layers
on the screen."
Jacobs' works, including Tritonis and
Wormhole: Purification, combine many
image fragments.
She uses very little photography,
preferring the endless variety of
scanned images whose effects can be
unexpected when blended.
"Some of the scanned materials I use
come from comics, graffiti and news-
paper clippings," Jacobs explains.
"I also scan collages I made in the
past to create, manipulate and recom-
bine. Usually, my finished work suggests
a theme rather than vice versa." ❑
