In Golan Heights
Jerusalem/JTA — Israeli soldiers killed
an armed infiltrator from Syria and
wounded another in a clash in the
foothills of the Golan Heights.
The clash erupted after soldiers at an
observation point spotted two figures
crossing from Syria into Israel, according
to Israel Radio. Israeli officials believe
the men were Syrian soldiers, and at
least one was wearing a Syrian army uni-
form. A third man who remained on the
Syrian side of the border opened fire on
the soldiers before fleeing.

Jerusalem/JTA — A man who immi-
grated to Israel from the former Soviet
Union was named Israel's ambassador
to Russia.
On Jan. 1, Arkady Melman, who
immigrated to Israel 15 years ago, was
appointed the Jewish state's envoy to
Moscow.
Melman, 45, is the first Russian
immigrant to be named a major Israeli
ambassador, Foreign Minister
Binyamin Netanyahu said.

Orthodox Rabbi
Budapest/JTA — An Orthodox rabbi
was ordained in Budapest in what was
described as the first such ceremony
since the Holocaust.
Former Israeli Chief Rabbi Morde-
chai Eliahu and one of Russia's two
chief rabbis, Berel Lazar, attended the
ordination of Shlomo Koves at
Budapest's Chabad Lubavitch syna-
gogue.
Rabbis Eliahu and Lazar joined
Rabbi Baruch Oberlander, a Lubavitch
rabbi who has been based in Budapest
since 1989, in placing a prayer shawl
over Rabbi Koves' shoulders.
Born in Budapest, Koves graduated
from high school in Pittsburgh before
studying to be a rabbi in Paris, New
York and Israel.
