Timothy Eddy of the Orion String Quartet.

in Philadelphia, where he now teaches,
the violist started freelancing and net-
working with other musicians as soon
as he relocated.
While forging a longtime association
with the Marlboro Music Festival, he
also established performance relation-
ships with other groups and came to
appear with the Guarneri and
Emerson String Quartets, Kalichstein-
Laredo-Robinson and Beaux Arts trios
and the Chamber Music Society of
Lincoln Center.
Touring took him to many coun-
tries, and recording brought him
many fresh experiences.
Tenenbom and Kavafian, who met
on tour with the five-member Tashi
ensemble and have been married since
1990, recently formed their own
chamber group, Opus One, which
includes pianist Anne-Marie
McDermott and cellist Peter Wiley.
The couple feel comfortable in con-
cert together because they have
learned to treat those experiences as
strictly professional projects and cast
the personal aspects aside.

Time In Jerusalem

"Working in Jerusalem was phe-
nomenal as was touring the Armenian
quarter, where I was treated very well
because I am Ida Kavafian's husband."
The Orion String Quartet, known
for its interpretation of the Beethoven
String Quartets through performances
of the complete cycle, has appeared in
two other programs in Ann Arbor, but
there weren't any dancers.
Teaming up with the Bill T
Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company has
given Orion members a new perspective.
They have had to stand, sit and hold
their bows in certain ways, and they
notice that the audience has changed
their focus to dancer movement
instead of musicians in concert.
"We leave the 'Meet the Artists' ses-
sions up to each audience by respond-
ing to questions," Tenenbom says.
"I enjoy this because I love sharing
and finding out what people are
thinking." 0

The Orion String Quartet
appears in a dance and chamber
music program with the Bill T.
Jones/Arnie Zane Dance
Company 8 p.m. Saturday and 4
p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11 12, at the
Power Center for the Performing
Arts, 121 Fletcher Street, Ann
Arbor. There will be a "Meet the
Artists" post-performance discus-
sion on Saturday. $20-$38/$10
student rush. (800) 221-1229.
