hinese Auctions put the "fun" in
fundraising, and Akiva Hebrew Day
School's December event was no excep-
tion. Over 500 guests happily bought
tickets to bid on fabulous prizes, including jewelry,
computers, furniture and valuable gift certificates to
local merchants. When the total was rung up, chair-
men Sandy Eisenberg and his brother, Barry, esti-
mate the Southfield school raised over $50,000.
Clusters of blue and white helium balloons
filled the lobby and social hall of Oak Park's
Congregation Beth Shalom, reflecting the
auction's "Return to the Holyland" theme.
Devorah Rich headed up the decorating
committee with co-chair Cheryl Yashinsky. "I
wanted it simple and elegant; not a lot of clut-
ter," she said.
Auction-goers mingled and noshed from
a hot buffet by Phil Tewel of Jewel Kosher
Catering, enjoying sweet and sour meat-
balls, falafel and chicken tenders. A dessert
table offered fancy cakes, cookies and hot
apple cobbler.
