Literacy Volunteers
To Be Trained
Body Rolling
Class At JCC
Two area educators will be the
speakers at the Monday, Jan. 13,
Detroit Jewish Coalition for
Literacy (DJCL) volunteers training
workshop 4-6 p.m. at the Max M.
Fisher Federation Building in
Bloomfield Township.
New and veteran volunteers will
gain insight and skills for tutoring
English as a second language and
special education students.
Dina Krause, preschool-special
education coordinator for Oakland
Schools, will discuss strategies for
tutoring special needs K-3 students.
Margaret Shamoun, an ESL bilin-
gual staff member of the
Birmingham Public Schools, will
handle making connection and
meeting the needs of ESL students.
The DJCL is chaired by council
board members SallyJo Levine and
Ellie Slovis and is an affiliate of the
National Jewish Coalition for
Literacy.

The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit will offer
Yamuna Body Rolling master classes
on Sunday, Jan. 12, from 8:30 to
9:30 a.m., and on Tuesday, Jan. 14,
from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The classes will be conducted in
the Health Club at the JCC in West
Bloomfield.
Yamuna Body Rolling is a practice
of rolling the body over specially
designed balls in routines that fol-
low the body's natural order.
The class will be taught by
nationally certified massage thera-
pist and certified instructor Shelly
Metzger and is free to all JCC
Fitness and Health Club members.
It is available to the public and gen-
eral members with the purchase of a
guest pass.

Volunteers Begin
Hospice Training
Jewish Family Service and Jewish
Hospice and Chaplaincy Network
are seeking volunteers who will pro-
vide consolation and assistance to
terminally ill clients and their fami-
lies.
The 12-hour training curriculum
includes an introduction to hospice,
volunteer responsibilities, communi-
cation skills, care and comfort meas-
ures, psychological and spiritual
issues related to death and dying,
stress management, bereavement,
infection control, safety, confiden-
tiality, patient rights and Jewish tra-
ditions related to death and dying.
Training will take place over three
days begining in February. Dates
have not yet been finalized.
Volunteers must attend all three ses-
sions.
