Meet Andy Stern

ndy Stern recalls his grandparents
when he thinks about the rank and
file of his Service Employees
International Union. The blue-collar
janitors and white-collar clerks, middle managers
and even scientists who make up his 1.5 million
members have much in common with his immi-
grant ancestors: for Stern, they all deserve decent
wages and benefits from their employers and the
chance to make America great.
This one-time social work major is a rising
power in the American labor movement and a
man to be reckoned with on Capitol Hill and in
the streets of Boston, New York and Los Angeles.
