"It's a mitzvah we enjoy," said Janel Tarnow, a second-year participant with husband Steven, who added, "We're helping those who can't get out today. Their adult daughter, Michelle, was joining them. Residents at Grovecrest Supportive Care in Pontiac, a home for the aged, were happy to receive visits from sev- eral families with children. "It's a different experience for our children," said Barbara Guttman of Novi, accompanied by her husband, Jay, and children Eric, 13, Amanda, 8 and Jennifer, 6. "They need to see everyone isn't fortunate enough to have family visiting today." Also making the rounds of resident rooms was Joe Starr of Farmington Hills with his twins, Shira and Zach, 7. "People love to talk,' Starr said. "This is just a nice thing to do." Site coordinator for volunteers at Grovecrest was Marla Zwas of Southfield, participating with hus- band, Jerold, and children Raffi, 2, and Atara, 4. Grace Centers of Hope, formerly the Pontiac Rescue Mission, offers a 30-day emergency shelter and a one- year residence for substance abuse rehabilitation. Mitzvah Day volunteers helped organize a new food delivery at Grace and served the noontime Christmas meal. Nathan Hubbard, 13, of Leonard Township said he had organized the pantry previously with the Boy Scouts. "If you've got things people need, you should help," he said. Volunteers working with him included Shirley Brooks and her hus- band, Morris Kaplan, of Walled Lake. Among those holding down the fort in the lunchroom were first-time Mitzvah Day volunteers Micha Zwick of Southfield and Lesley Weiss of Oak Park. Zwick was site coordinator. He and Weiss served pizza to the largely male group of diners, who also were offered salad, fruit and cake. Weiss felt good about her experience at Grace Centers. She volunteered because "it was something I could do to help the community on a day when nothing else is going on." 0 From top: Shirley Brooks of Walled Lake helps stock the shelves at Grace Centers of Hope in Pontiac.
