He also told the paper that he was
sure that "if Iraqi dictator Saddam
Hussein has weapons of mass destruc-
tion, he would use them."
Spiegel was re-elected earlier this
month as president of the Central
Council of Jews in Germany.

mats to the country.
Reeker's statement comes after for-
mer U.S. official Timothy Hunter told
the Middle East Forum that Jewish
officers in the State Department had a
letter "J" placed next to their name, so
that selection panels would not choose
them for Saudi posts.

U.S. May Deport
Man With Nazi Past

New York/JTA — The U.S. Justice
Department is seeking to deport a
New York man for concealing his Nazi
past.
The department's Nazi-hunting
Office of Special Investigations filed a
complaint in a Brooklyn federal court
Dec. 26 alleging that Jaroslaw
Bilaniuk, 79, from the borough of
Queens, persecuted Jews while serving
as an armed guard at a slave-labor
camp in Nazi-occupied Poland
The prosecution maintains that
Bilaniuk concealed his Nazi past in
order to gain entry to the United
States after World War II.
Including the Bilaniuk case, OSI has
started 10 such prosecutions during
2002, a new record, according to OSI
Director Eli Rosenbaum.

Orthodox Union
Urges Reform

Subway May
Damage Shul

New York/JTA — The Orthodox Union,
is urging the U.S. government to link
support for a Palestinian state to political
reform and an end to terrorism.
The O.U., which represents some
1,000 modern Orthodox congrega-
tions in North America, issued a reso-
lution last Friday backing legislation
that would tie U.S. support for
Palestinian statehood to a "visible and
tangible commitment to peace" by the
Palestinians. The resolution was issued
during the O.U.'s annual convention,
held Dec. 26-29 in Rye, N.Y.

Moscow/JTA — Jewish officials in the
Russian city of Kazan are trying to
save the city's only synagogue from
damage.
The synagogue is among many
buildings in Kazan's historic center
that are facing damage from the con-
struction of the city's first subway line.
Local Jewish donors and the
American Jewish Joint Distribution
Committee are expected to spend
thousands of dollars on geological
research and construction work to
reinforce the foundation of the 1915
synagogue, one of Russia's largest.

No Restrictions
On Diplomats

Washington/JTA — The U.S. State
Department denied that it refuses to
post Jewish diplomats to Saudi Arabia.
State Department spokesman Philip

assignments are "free from discrimina-
tion" and that there is no agreement
between the United States and Saudi
