Role Model

Koufax was not a devout Jew by any
means. He was assumed to be reli-
ous 3 but he was more of a cultural
ui
0
Jew, according to friends.
Indeed, in the early 1960s, before
Dodger manager Walter Alston was
given a calendar listing Jewish holidays
to help him with his pitching rotation,
Koufax was scheduled to pitch on
High Holy Days.
But the pitcher understood his
standing as a figure of importance
among Jews, and by the time of the
World Series game, there was no ques-
tion he wouldn't pitch.
"I'm Jewish. I'm a role model. I
want them to understand they have to
have pride," Koufax told a friend,
Rabbi Hillel Silverman.
Still, Jews may have read more into
Koufax's decision than he intended.
On that Yom Kippur, he was report-
edly seen at synagogues around the Twin
Cities and even in Los Angeles. In fact,
Leavy determined that Koufax spent
that Yom Kippur in his hotel room.

A Privilege

Thirry-six years after Koufax retired,
Leavy still finds that people are drawn
to the pitcher. On her book tour,
they've told her stories about him,
from the person who mentioned that
his parents were married the night of
his first no-hitter to the boys who
called the Dodger locker room and
asked Koufax to Yom Kippur services.
(He politely declined.)
People also are drawn to individuals
who have met him, like Leavy herself.
She's been phoned and pulled aside by
people who just want to know, "How's
he doing?"
"I got the intimation early on, what
it must be like to be him," she said.
"People perceive me as a conduit to
him." Even former teammates have
asked about Koufax, she said.
You can call Leavy a Sandy Koufax
fan now. She'd be pleased with the
term. Writing the biography "has been
a privilege," she said.
And what of Sandy Koufax himself?
He plays golf, drops by spring train-
ing, travels and stays in touch with
friends. He has nothing left to prove.
"People ask all the time, 'What's he
done with his life?'" former Dodger
pitcher and Braves broadcaster Don
Sutton told Leavy.
"He's enjoyed it." Li
