Mendy and the Golem:
The Key is the first in a
series of comic books
edited by Tani Pinson
and written by Matt
Brandstein. The illustra-
tors are Stan Goldberg
and Barry Grossman,
best knoWn for their work on the

Archie comics.
The Golem comic book series is intelligent, compelling, well writ-
ten and fun. In a word: terrific.
Additionally, it marks the first time an observant Jewish family is
at the center of a nationally syndicated comic strip.
(The golem, by the way, was a mythical creature that comes alive
only when a series of magical words are uttered; his sole job is pro-
tecting the Jewish people.)
Mendy and the Golen2 comic books, sold for $2.95, are available
at Spitzer's Hebrew Bookstore in Southfield and Borenstein Books
in Oak Park. Or, visit the Web site: -www.thegolem.com
Look for the second in the series next month.

Why Tom Cruise Keeps ft Quiet

New York Rabbi Irwin Katsof is stepping forward to
advance an ideal long advocated in Judaism: Speak
kindly of others.
Rabbi Katsof is the man behind Words Can Heal,
an organization that wants to end verbal abuse and
gossip — any words that can hurt. Charter Mem-
bers include actors Tom Cruise, Goldie Hawn,
Rene Russo and Tiffani Thiessen. Politicians who
have signed up include former New York City
Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Sens. Joe Lieberman,
D-Conn., and John McCain, R-Ariz.
Rabbi Katsof, also executive director of the
Jerusalem Fund of Aish HaTorah, hopes
that Words Can Heal will sign on 100,000
men, women and children around the
country to "take the pledge" and speak more
kindly.
Families can learn more about Words Can Heal, and take the
pledge (a video and handbook also are available), by visiting
www.wordscanheal.org

The Lowdown
On Low Stress

If you're feeling a little tense,
the thought of dinner at home
with your young children
might not sound like the most
relaxing experience. Think
again.
According to the new Sloan
500 Family Study,
conducted by the
University of
Chicago's Alfred P.
Sloan Center on
Parents, Children
and Work, family
time — any family
time — is more
stress-relieving
than you think.
The survey was
conducted among
500 families
nationwide and its
findings include:

• The best way
for parents to relax is to spend
time with family no matter
what the noise level. The sur-
vey found that parents were
more friendly and happy after
engaging in an activity with
their children, of any age.
• Most mothers would
rather work part time, while
most fathers prefer fulltime
employment.
• Most mothers schedule
their work hours and place of
employment to accommodate
their family's needs.
