Rabbi Morris is very proud of a
new Family Learning Program fol-
lowing Shabbat services on Saturday
nights. Each family forms its own
group, with parents and their chil-
dren studying a topic of their choos-
ing. So far about 35 people have
attended each session.
A rabbi's wife is also an important
ingredient in any synagogue mix,
and Adina Morris has been a wel-
come addition to Young Israel. She
has implemented a Chesed (kindness)
Committee, which provides support
for new mothers, mourners and peo-
ple who are ill or homebound. It
also offers volunteer opportunities
for children in the congregation.
"We really like Mrs. Morris; she is
as enthusiastic as he is," said Dr.
Gotlib. "She also jumped in with
both feet, which is a real plus in a
small shul like ours."
The sisterhood, under the leader-
ship of Dr. Devorah Rich, is also
planning more social and recreation-
al activities, including a women's
health program. They recently start-
ed a Monday morning tehillim
(psalms) session, where people can
come to recite psalms for friends and
family members who are ill.
There is also a new women's Rosh
Chodesh study class each month, a
new weekly synagogue bulletin and a
series of oneg Shabbat gatherings at
the rabbi's home.
"Things are really happening
now," Rabbi Morris said. "One of
the beautiful things about our syna-
gogue is its sense of community; it is
very friendly and welcoming."
Synagogue member Dr. Irving
Goldfein of Southfield remembers
Rabbi Morris as a kindergartner in
the Rochester, N.Y., day school
where Dr. Goldfein was a principal.
"We knew the family and still
have friends in common in New
York," said Dr. Goldfein. "Everyone
always had the highest regard for
them. We're really delighted with
Rabbi Morris. He's very comfortable
with himself, very open and honest."
The transition of leadership has
been a smooth and successful one,
according to synagogue members.
"Rabbi Goldberg has become a
wonderful mentor to Rabbi Morris,"
said Dr. Gotlib. "It doesn't always
work out that way, and it's a credit
to both of them that they have such
a beautiful relationship."
