Film Festival
Wins Maas Prize
The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit has won the
Benard L. Maas Prize for Achieve-
ment in Jewish Culture and
Continuity.
The JCC received the prize in the
institutional division for its Lenore
Marwil Jewish Film Festival. It will be
presented formally next spring. Dr.
David
Magidson is the film festival direc-
tor. Susan Marwil and Martin W.
Hollander are the film festival chairs.
The Jewish Federation-sponsored
prize takes the form of a one-time
grant of $2,500 to the winning insti-
tution or individual.
Cantor Sholom Kalib, cantor emeri-
tus of Congregation Beth Israel of
Flint, received the individual prize.
The Maas Prize is conferred annual-
ly on both an individual and an
organization on a rotating basis in the
areas of performing arts (music, the-
ater, dance); fine arts (visual, media,
multi-disciplinary arts and architec-
ture); and the humanities (contempo-
rary, literary, historical, social or cul-
tural studies).
The intent of the prize is to cele-
brate and bring honor to individual
artists whose work enhances Jewish
life and community; encourage the
exploration of Jewish cultural issues
and the creation of innovative Jewish
works of art; and recognize and
applaud the institutions for their role
in advancing the cause of Jewish arts
and culture.
Prize winners are chosen by a com-
mittee made up of community profes-
sionals and volunteers, with experi-
ence in the areas of the humanities.
Dr. Phoebe Mainster chairs the corn-
mittee.
