60 Misunderstood Man
A
sk Jewish college students these days what sort of
career they're interested in pursuing and you still
get the old standbys: medicine, business or law.
But more and more, we're hearing about a choice that is
no longer considered "pie-in-the-sky": filmmaker.
It used to be that these aspirants to a career in movies
or television had to travel to one of the coasts to get the
kind of training they'd need. No longer. Drawing on its
long history of top-notch education in the writing arts,
the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor now offers
arguably the best screenwriting program in the country.
It's headed by Plymouth resident Jim Burnstein, the man who penned
1994's Renaissance Man starring Danny DeVito, and co-authored with his
cousin and partner Garrett Schiff The Quarterback's Tale, a new screenplay
that's just been optioned for half a million dollars.
But aspiring filmmakers — who know that any project is only as good as
its script — need not worry. Burnstein's passion for teaching, as well as writ-
ing, is keeping him at U-M, where he regularly brings in leading Hollywood
practitioners of his art.
Huntington Woods-based freelance writer Erin Podolsky introduces us to
Burnstein, and the U-M program, in this week's cover story.
