Lieberman Backs
Palestinian State

Washington/JTA — Sen. Joseph
Lieberman, D-Conn., expressed sup-
port for Palestinian statehood during
a visit to Ramallah.
"There's strong support for the
aspirations of the Palestinian people
for independent statehood. The
question is whether there will be suf-
ficient leadership here and in the
world to bring this about sooner
than later," Lieberman told reporters
Monday following talks with
Palestinian Authority Minister Yasser
Abed Rabbo.
Lieberman, who called conditions
in Ramallah "desperate," met later
Monday with Palestinian Cabinet
Minister Saeb Erekat. Erekat said
they discussed the urgentneed to
revive the peace process.
Lieberman, who will announce in
January whether he will seek the
U.S. presidency in 2004, met with
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

Revise 'Road Map '

Jerusalem/JTA — Israeli and
- Palestinian officials were given a
revised version of the U.S. "road
map" for achieving peace between
the two sides. The revised version
incorporated some of their reactions
to an earlier draft.
Ra'anan Gissin, an adviser to
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, said
Monday that in the revised version,
Israel will not have to withdraw
from Palestinian areas until a cease-
fire is in place. "There has to be a
real fight against terrorism," Gissin
said.
Palestinian Authority leader Yasser
Arafat told reporters that he has "a
lot of reservations" about the revised
plan, but did not spell them out.
In a related development, Arafat's
Fatah movement is renewing
Egyptian-backed efforts to persuade
Hamas and Islamic Jihad to halt
attacks on Israeli civilians.

Two Hamas
Members Killed

Jedrusalem/JTA — Israeli undercov-
er soldiers killed two Hamas mem-
bers near the West Bank city of
Jenin.
One of those killed was a senior

member of the Hamas military wing
and on Israel's wanted list, the
Associated Press reported.
Palestinian officials said the bodies
of the two were riddled by bullets,
and accused Israel of killing them in
a targeted attack.

Israeli Court Rules
Against Surrogates

Jerusalem/JTA — Israel's High
Court of Justice unanimously reject-
ed a petition to let single women use
the services of surrogate mothers to
have children.
The court ruled on a petition
arguing that the current law on sur-
rogacy, which restricts the option to
couples, is discriminatory.

New Hope
For Patients

Jerusalem/JTA — Israeli researchers
said they developed a technique to
enable kidney patients to grow a
new organ instead of waiting for a
transplant.
According to the findings of the
research, which appear in the journal
Nature Medicine, the scientists iden-
tified human and pig cells that build
kidneys. Cells implanted in laborato-
ry mice grew into functioning kid-
neys in several weeks, the Israeli
daily Mdariv reported.

Arab Porn Stars

Israeli Arab town beat up a local
couple who made a pornographic
film.
Residents of Tira said the film
embarrasses the town and insults
Islam.
The woman, an Israeli Arab, and
her Palestinian husband said they
agreed to make the movie- because
they need the money.
