Merry Oldsmobile The recorded songs fall into many cat- egories, including national allegiance ("The Star Spangled Banner" and "My Country, 'Tis of Thee"), attitudes toward war ("The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Over There") and citi- zen pride ("Yankee Doodle" and "This Land is Your Land"). Detroiters can wax nostalgic with "In My Merry Oldsmobile," performed by Les Brown's Band of Renown in 1946. "When the series producers came to us, they had some music already in mind," Berkowitz says. "As our team started seeing some of the footage, we asked about other songs. "We started to add to the sound- track and eventually became music consultants besides being producers of the companion recordings. We added a great deal of music to the film as yawl oait soundtrack as well as other songs to create the boxed set and single CD." Berkowitz, who has worked with Columbia Records for 15 years, also has been a musician, radio disc jockey, con- cert promoter and agent. He worked with Ken Burns on his jazz series and was involved with a recent release of pianist Glenn Gould's concerts. "I worked on the freedom project for six months — and a lifetime," Berkowitz says. "I think of the recordings as a fun listen as well as an experience into the evolution of American music." ❑ Farmington Hills Detroit 30985 Orchard Lake Rd. (between 13 & 14 Mile Rd.)
