NEALE STONE

F- - INE JEWELRY

In a letter ("Facts Challenge Basis of
Seeds," Dec. 13, page 6), Alex Skoczylas
attempts to provide some facts regarding
Seeds of Peace, begun in 1993 by the
late John Wallach, not Saeb Erekat, as
Mr. Skoczylas claims.
Mr. Wallach began a dream to teach
peaceful coexistence to the youth in
embattled lands, starting with the
Middle East.
Mr. Skoczylas writes as 'fact" that
political leaders like Palestinian
spokesman Yasser Rabbo or former U.S.
Ambassador to Israel and Egypt Edward
S. Walker Jr. are inappropriate speakers
at events sponsored by Seeds of Peace. If
I remember my history correctly, it was
then-Israeli Prime Minister Menachem
Begin who shook hands in peace with
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, sworn
enemies of each other just a few years
before.
I seriously doubt Mr. Skoczylas' "fact"
that the late Mr. Begin would be turning
in his grave because former adversaries
consider shaking hands in peace.
I doubt that Israel's first prime minis-
ter, David Ben-Gurion, is turning in his
grave either. Ben-Gurion appealed to all
the surrounding Arab leaders and
extended a hand of "neighbourliness"
and peace in the Declaration of the
Establishment of the State of Israel. Ben-
Gurion wrote: "The State of Israel is
prepared to do its share in a common
effort for the advancement of the entire
Middle East."
Mr. Skoczylas uses the "guilt by associ-
ation" argument to indict the organiza-
tion for one person's actions. The facts
are that Adam Shapiro did not represent
Seeds of Peace well, his actions were
wrong and he was fired from Seeds of
Peace for his beliefs long before he
appeared at the University of Michigan
in October.
Gandhi said in hi-s poem "It Is
Possible to Live in Peace": "If we are to
reach real peace in this world, and if we
are to carry on a real war against war, we
shall have to begin with the children."
