That's one of the problems with CF, everyone passes away so darn young." Josh was 24 then, and interested in architecture. He had to bring his oxygen tank to the photo session, but removed it for the picture. In the calendar, Josh looks young and healthy, but in fact he was terribly sick. He spent most of his time in bed, and he knew he needed a double-lung trans- plant. He fought for life for a long time. But about a week before his death, Josh turned to his mother and said, "I just can't take it anymore." One day, he asked her to let him go. That night, he died. Today, Bonnell calls Josh, "an inspiration." Another volunteer on the project, Steve Takenaga, stepped in at the last minute to design the calendar. As though he didn't have enough to do. Steve was dealing with his own disease: cancer. "He would do chemo in the morning and the calendar in the afternoon," Bonnell says. Steve died late last month. The final step was printing the calen- dar, which was paid for by Bonnell, her family and friends, and Axcan Scandipharm, a pharmaceutical compa- ny that manufactures various CF drugs. Millcraft donated the paper, while Goodwill Printing made a large dona- tion toward printing the calendar. Bonnell said all money raised from the sale of calendars goes directly to CF research. Thanks to e-mail, Bonnell has man- aged to keep in contact with many of the people pictured in the calendar. She said she hopes one day to write a book filled with the same kinds of portraits. Now, though, she enjoys spending every minute she can with her daughters. "Sometimes I see them and say, 'They look so healthy. They can't be sick --- there's no way,"' she says. "Every day, life is really great. But the problem with CF is you can never stop thinking about it." 0 The Portraits of Cystic Fibrosis cal- endar may be ordered from Laura Teicher Bonnell at laurabonnell@hotmail.com or by calling (800) FIGHT-CF.
