Grant Supports
Religious Diversity

The Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit has received a
$25,000 grant from the Community
Foundation for Southeastern Michigan
to support a religious diversity initiative
in the public schools.
The grant will enable council to re-
establish the Religious Diversity
Symposium, which it sponsored and
facilitated along with the National
Conference for Community and Justice
(NCCJ) and the Oakland Schools
Superintendents Association for
Oakland County Public Schools from
1997-1999. The 18-month grant will
fund two diversity symposiums, the first
of which is being planned for the spring
of 2003.
The council-sponsored Detroit Jewish
Coalition for Literacy (DJCL) received
two grants to further its mission of
•mobilizing the Jewish community to
fight illiteracy.
The Starbucks Foundation, formed
by Starbucks chairman Howard Schultz,
awarded the DJCL $5,000 for program-
ming, volunteer training and materials.
In addition, First Book, a national
nonprofit organization, provided the
DJCL with close to 500 new books to
enrich the lives of children and families
that the DJCL serves. First Book's mis-
sion is to give children from low-
income families the opportunity to read
and own their first new books by work-
ing with existing literacy programs.
The Community Foundation works
to improve the quality of life in south-
east Michigan by supporting a variety of
activities benefiting education, arts and
culture, health, human services, com-
munity development and civic affairs.

Beth Shalom Sets
A Chinese Buffet

Congregation Beth Shalom will host a
Chinese buffet Tuesday, Dec. 24.
The event is sponsored by the
Cultural Commission of Congregation
Beth Shalom and is open to the com-
munity. The menu has been prepared by
B'Tayavon Catering. Musical entertain-
ment will be provided by Jennifer and
Sid Zack.
The reservation deadline is Monday,
Dec. 23. The charge for adults is
.$22.50; for children 13 and younger,
$11. There is no charge for children
younger than 3.
