brutalized, and it was really my job
to make it as real and as visceral as
possible.

Q: Is there any episode of terror in
you own life that you could draw on
for this role?
KS: I did have a situation which was
sort of different. I was never abused, at
least not physically. But I was driving
up the street and I had my kids in the
back seat; we were just coming back
from shopping.
And this woman comes across in
front of my car with three naked kids
behind her, with blood all over them
They were screaming, and she threw
the kids in her car and she started to
get herself into the car.
I pulled over and I had to basically
hold on to this woman and keep her
calm until the cops came. She was
completely insane and definitely on
drugs, and she was hitting her kids.
The horror of that was a sensory thing
I could draw upon.

Q: Your husband is most well known
as an actor. What are your thoughts
about his other career as a musician?
KS: I have to say I envy him so much
because he has two creative outlets and
he gets such a tremendous amount
from both. He can take situations in
his life, things that have happened to
him and things that he's feeling, and
he can make a song out of it. And it's
almost how he works through prob-
lems.
I envy that because so much of the
time you're puzzling through things in
life and what outlet do you have to
work through it?

Q: What is your impression of
Michael Caine, who co-stars in your
next film?
KS: The film is called Secondhand
Lions and it is a great film. It takes
place in 1962 and is about this boy,
played by Haley Joel Osment, who
spends the summer with his uncles.
It's sort of a right of passage for him,
and I play Haley s crazy, misguided
mother who thinks she can get away
with anything so long as she's got a
nice smile on her face.
Michael is going to be amazing in it,
and he's such a jolly man. That's what
I would say about Michael, he's a jolly
fellow. E
