"My big jump was in 1969, when
I was the winner of the Leventritt
Award," the pianist says about the
program that has since been discon-
tinued. "The jury included conduc-
tor George Sze11, pianist Rudolf
Serkin and conductor William
Steinberg, and that made it both an
ego boost and a career door-opener."
The trio will be opening the door
to local CMSD contributors of
S10,000 or more as they participate
in a special event hosted by Maxine
and Stuart Frankel in their home.
he evening will include a trio per-
formance and a look at the Frankels'
contemporary art collection.

Kalichstein ascribes the trio's
longevity to the same considerations
that make for an enduring marriage,
which husband-and-wife Laredo and
Robinson have enjoyed during the
same time frame they've been part of
the trio.
"We show tolerance, respect, a
willingness to listen and a willing-
ness to give in while defending indi-
vidual ideas," says Kalichstein, mar-
ried for 31 years to attorney Rowain
Kalichstein and the father of two
grown sons, one a banker and the
other an actor.
"Some people are made to last
together, and some are not," he says.
"We are glad we found the right
people to be with."
Kalichstein, who serves on the
advisory boards of Jewish cultural
organizations including the cantorial
arm of Hebrew Union College,
refuses administrative work that
keeps him away from performing.
He says he wants to enjoy the
many aspects of his career as a
soloist with leading orchestras,
recitalist, chamber musician and
teacher.
"I first played chamber music just
for fun," Kalichstein says. "I've been
very lucky to keep all these hats over
so many years." ❑
