he Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson International Trio Award (KLRITA) is seek-
ing a major dOnor to supplement funds already available for enhancing the
careers of promising young piano trios.
Since the - initiative was announced last year at Carnegie Hall, 20 presenters
across the country have signed on to support and book award winners.
Lois Beznos, president of the Chamber Music Society of Detroit, formulated
the program, which establishes a biennial honor managed by the Michigan-based
chamber music organization. A panel will choose the honorees, who will visit par-
ticipating venues over the two years for which they were chosen.
"We're hoping that everything will be in order so that we can choose a group
for the 2003-2004 season," Beznos says. Each presenter committed $30,000 to
the endowment, and we want to increase our funding to $2 million."
Presenters include the Irving S. Gilmore International Keyboard - Festival in
Kalamazoo, Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in California and the San
Antonio Chamber Music Society in Texas. Machold Rare Violins will lend historic
violins and cellos to the winning trio members.
"The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio recently celebrated their. 25th 'anniver-
sary, and we want to honor and perpetuate their talents," Beinos says. ''They real-
ly set a standard as high-caliber performers who have stayed together for such a
long time."
