ost Jewish children know
the story of Chanukah
and the miracle of the
vial of oil that miracu-
lously lasted for eight days, but how
many know where the oil comes from?
Chabad of Commerce held its first
Olive Press Craft Workshop Dec. 2 at
the Richardson Center in Commerce as
part of its Chanukah celebration, which
was open to the community.
Helping Rabbi Schneor Greenberg
was Yossi Freedman from Argentina,
currently studying in Oak Park. Estie
Greenberg, the rabbi's wife, had planned
to help, but she had given birth to their
son, Levi Yitzchak, on Nov. 30.
Families gathered at the workshop
and pitted fresh olives, then squeezed
them with a hand press. The extract was
strained and spun in a centrifuge to sep-
arate the pure oil.
The 20 participants of all ages next
fashioned a cotton wick to be used with
the oil to light the menorah. All received
a sample of their work, the pressed oil,
to. take home. O
