Rabbis Cuffed
In War Protest
New York/JTA — Three rabbis were
arrested during a protest in New York
against a possible U.S. war with Iraq.
Rabbi Arthur Waskow of Philadel-
phia and New York Rabbis Michael
Feinberg and Ellen Lippmann were
among about 100 people arrested for
civil disobedience after they blocked
the entrance of the U.S. Mission to the
United Nations. The protest was part
of a series of anti-war demonstrations
held in more than 100 American cities
in conjunction with International
Human Rights Day.
Those arrested were "joyful and
determined," Waskow told JTA from
his prison cell, where they were expect-
ed to be held for four hours.

Funds for the gifts were collected as
part of the Israel Emergency
Campaign, run by the Jewish Agency

Annan Foresees
Peace In 3 Years
New York/JTA — A peaceful, two-state
solution to the Israeli-Palestinian con-
flict can be achieved within three years,
according to Kofi Annan.
The U.N. secretary-general made the
assessment in.a speech at a dinner for
the American Committee for the
Weizmann Institute of Science.
Annan also said that the majority of
Palestinians accept the continued exis-
tence of Israel and are ready to live
alongside it in their own state. He
added that the majority of Israelis
accept that peace requires the establish-
ment of a Palestinian state in nearly all
of the territory Israel captured follow-
ing the 1967 Six-Day War.
