New Year a
Colorful
,
In the photo above, I'm seated with Fox 2 reporter Lee Thomas and architect Keenie
Fieger after a television segment called "House of Style."
t's the place we gather with friends, share conversa-
tion, celebrateholidays and break bread with family.
A table, while functional, also reflects who we are
and how we live. And a table setting can make a per-
sonal statement that impacts all those who admire it.
With that in mind, in this season of celebration, we fea-
ture the holiday tabletops created for Adat Shalom's hiddur
mitzvah. We think you'll agree they provide "perfect set-
tings."
A pre-holiday event also caught our eye. The Michigan
Parkinson Gala and Auction at Park West Gallery had a
glamorous Betty Boop theme, complete with autographed
photos of Hollywood screen sirens of yesteryear.
Adding more sparkle to this issue are the crystal-stud-
ded picture frames and other opulent accessories by
designer Jay Strongwater. His over-the-top bejeweled cre-
ations are in stark contrast to the detailed, folk-art chagim
houses lovingly crafted by artist Rifcah Krolikowski. Both
artists involve devoted families in their work.
If you're an ardent collector, you'll appreciate the pas-
sionate pastime of Barbara Alpert. She fell in love with the
painterly accessories of Mackenzie-Childs and has filled
her house with their creations. The colorful collection
includes everything from chairs and ottomans to tassels
and teacups.
Batten down the hatches and curl up by the fire. After
an early Chanukah immediately following Thanksgiving,
you're due for some r&r. New Year's is just around the cor-
ner.
