DR. ARNOLD ROYAL, 84, of

Birmingham, Ala., died Nov. 22,
2002. He was educated at Lakeview
Elementary, Ramsay High School,
Birmingham Southern College and
Tulane School of Medicine.
Dr. Royal practiced pediatrics for
approximately 50 years and was an
active member of the Birmingham,
Ala., Children's Hospital medical
staff. He loved ballroom dancing
and was a skilled and avid athlete.
He was a city champion at tennis at
age 16, played baseball at
Birmingham Southern College and
shot his age in golf at age 75.
He was a veteran of World War II,
serving as a physician with the rank
of captain in the Philippines and
New Guinea. In Birmingham, he
was an active leader in the Jewish
and civic community. Among his
activities, he served as president of
Temple Beth El, Israel Bonds, the
Birmingham Jewish Federation, the
Fairmont Club and the Lions Club.
Dr. Royal is survived by his chil-
dren, Marty Buck and Melvin of
Houston, Texas, Joyce Serwitz and
Dr. Arthur Serwitz of Birmingham,
Dr. Edward Royal and Verne of
Detroit, Dr. Stuart Royal and
Barbara of Birmingham, Robin
Kirby and Richard of Atlanta, Ga.;
grandchildren, Andy Buck and Julie,
Stephanie Buck, Rachael and Jeremy
Royal, Shelley and David Serwitz,
Jamie Royal, Brandon, Jennifer and
Erin Kirby; great-grandchildren,
Teddy and Nathan Buck; brother,
Ben Royal of Cincinnati; in-laws
Elaine Royal, Karl and Gladys
Friedman, Micky and Stanley
Rubenstein, Naomi Royal; loving
companion, Anne Cohn. He was the
husband of the late Elaine Friedman
Royal; son of the late J. B. and
Fannie Esther Royal; brother of the
late Louis and Morris Royal.
Graveside services were held at
Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham,
Ala. Contributions may be made to
Temple Beth El or Children's
Hospital in Birmingham, Ala.

BETTY YOUNG RYNEK, 91, of
West Bloomfield, died Nov. 28,
2002.
She is survived by her daughters

and son-in-law, Sharon and Harvey
Rubenstein of West Bloomfield,
Lenore Lowenstein of Las Vegas,
Nev.; son and daughter-in-law,
Sheldon and Martha Young of
Highland Park, Ill.; brother, Max
Kaufman of Vero Beach, Fla.; sister,
Sarah Lebus of Southfield; grand-
children, Michael (Laurie) Young,
Marc (Cynthia) Young, Amy (Scott)
Gilbert, Andrew (Sylvia)
Lowenstein, Brian (Connie)
Lowenstein, Alyssa (fiance, Bob
Schneider) Rubenstein, Nora (Chris)
Gaydos; great-grandchildren, Ashley,
Brandt, Evan, Erin, Crystal, Tiffany,
Joshua, Daniel, Matty and Luke;
great-great-grandson, Matthew. She
was the beloved wife of the late
Abraham Young and the late Jerome
D. Rynek; sister of the late Leo
Kaufman and Mollie Feldman;
mother-in-law of the late Norman
Lowenstein.
Interment at the Hebrew
Memorial Park Cemetery.

FEIGA SHENKMAN, 69, of Hadera,

Israel, died Nov. 18, 2002.
She is survived by her husband,
Michael Shenkman; son and daughter-
in-law, Dov and Judith Shenkman of
West Bloomfield; daughter and son-
in-law, Liza and Hannan Alpert of
Hadera; grandchildren, Avital and
Sharon Alpert and Alex and Jonathan
Shenkman.
Interment in Hadera, Israel.

ILYA STRUMBA, 82, of Oak Park,

died Nov. 19, 2002.
He is survived by his wife, Malka
Strumba; daughter and son-in-law,
Raisa and Mikhail Aronson of
Farmington Hills; grandchildren,
Anna and Yakov Fradkin, Dmitriy
and Viktoriya Strumba, Yevgemiya
Strumba, Polina Fradkin, Sarah
Fradkin.
