Owner Of Car Used Bush Offers
In Bombing Queried Chanukah Wishes

IvIombasa/JTA — Kenyan police said
they questioned the former owner of
the car used in the Nov. 28 suicide
bombing of a hotel near Mombasa.
The man told investigators he sold
the car to two men of "Arab origin"
two weeks before the attack, Kenya's
top investigator said. Three Israelis
and 10 Kenyans were killed in the
attack on the Israeli-owned Hotel
Paradise. Al Qaida has claimed respon-
sibility for the attack.

Washington/JTA — Chanukah
reminds Americans that "in the face
of darkness, goodness will prevail,"
President George W. Bush said.
"Chanukah reminds us that faith
can give us the strength to overcome
oppression," the president said
before the holiday began. "Today,
the spirit of the Maccabees contin-
ues to live and thrive among the
Jewish people and in the State of
Israel."

Bloomfield Township — As the cri-
sis in the Middle East builds, how
can war with Iraq be diverted?
World-renowned expert on Iraq Dr.
Amatzia Baram of the University of
Haifa will discuss the issue over
lunch at noon Friday, Dec. 13, at
the Max M. Fisher Federation
Building 6735 Telegraph Road,
Bloomfield Township.
Dr. Baram's topic will be "Iraq
and the Fight Against Terrorism."
He is a professor in the department
of history of the Middle East and
director of the Jewish-Arab Center
and the Gustav Heinemann
Institute for the Study of the
Middle East.
Born in Israel in 1938, Dr. Baram
was raised and educated in Kibbutz
Kfar Menachem. Upon ending his
regular military service, he entered
the reserves where he became acting
tank battalion commander. Until
the early 1990s, he served "on loan"
from the tank corps to the military
intelligence, working on the Iraqi
"desk."

After a brief career working on
the kibbutz farm and teaching the
sciences in the local high school,
and following the Six-Day War, Dr.
Baram decided to study the history,
society, politics and culture of the
Arab and Islamic nations. Upon
completing all three degrees at the
Hebrew University, he taught at the
Hebrew University between 1976
and 1980. Since then, he has been
teaching at the University of Haifa.
Since 1990, he also has been lectur-
ing at Israel's National Defense
College.
Between 1984 and 1988, Dr.
Baram was a member of a small
team advising Prime Minister (and
later Foreign Minister) Shimon
Peres on Arab and Gulf affairs.
Since then he has been advising var-
ious Western governments about
Iraq and the Gulf.
The cost of the lunch is $12.
Registration starts at 11:45 a.m.
