Imagine Little House on the Prairie meet-
ing up with your great-great-grandpar-
ents.
Chanukah on the Prairie is a really nice
book. A father, his wife and their two -
young children are on their way to
America. They're excited ("America,"
shouted Daniel, "where a Jew can truly
be a somebody!"), then apprehensive
when they land.
"Please don't take that ferry to New
York," they're advised. "If you do, you'll
end up living and working in terrible
conditions!"
So, they head off to Grand Forks,
N.D., and guess what? Many Jews are
already there. They welcome the new
family — bringing kosher food and
inviting everyone to participate in corn-
munity life. When Chanukah comes,
they all gather for latices as the menorot
(Chanukah lamps) light up the night.
What a pleasure to read a Chanukah
book that isn't cutesy; immersed in gift
giving or a rehash of everything we've
heard before.
