SUCCESS STORY Dept. ... He was
always known as the gent who sold
espresso machines and espresso coffee
to restaurants ... The native New
Yorker who came here from Los
Angeles and married Gayle, the girl he
had chosen as his bride.
At the first stab of a new sideline
venture, called the Cappuccino Man,
he and Gayle doled out about 225
drinks (latte, cappuccino and hot
chocolate fluties) and it was the begin-
ning of something that would eventu- -
ally demand his full time ... not be
just a minor part of his livelihood.
Today, as Elliot Lewkow embarks on
his 10th anniversary since that begin-
ning ... when he used a "cart" that was
simply a six-foot table with the
machine on top ... he is doing so with
seven full-service cappuccino, smooth-
ie, etc. carts for every type of occasion
... Also a menu of over 15 items
(including his signature drink, a
Snickers latte.)
His is a family business, too ... Son
Noah helped pay his way through
Michigan State, and son Jacob and
daughter Sarah also assist dad.
Other than Elliot's regular callings
(Ford's 100th anniversary coming in
June, Woodward Cruise event in
Birmingham's Shain Park in August),
he is also certified kosher by the
Council of Orthodox Rabbis ... with
Rabbi Joseph Krupnik kashering his
machines, bowls, etc. for occasions
that demand kashrut observance.
From those original 225 drinks,
Elliot and his seven carts do about
3,000 each day now
CLOSER SCRUTINY seems to
have developed on some restaurants
that claim to give "rollback prices" but
don't mention smaller portions and
lower quality.
