A chain that develops one of its
restaurants in gear to the locale it
serves is with good sound thinking.
Buddy's Pizza of Farmington Hills is
in this very fine mold.
WHEN THE GOLDEN -Mushroom
closes its doors after the end of this year,
it will bring to a close the highly suc-
cessful chapter in the life of a one-time
very popular upscale restaurant.
Since opening on 10 Mile and
Southfield in Southfield, it became
best known for its continental cuisine,
wild game dishes and inventive use of
wild mushrooms.
Owner Reid Ashton bought the
Rascal House deli at this site ...
remodeled the facility ... and opened
to a waiting public.
In 1976, Chef Milos Cihelka left the
London Chop House in Detroit to
become Reid's executive chef and part-
ner ... In 1981, Milos became the first
master chef certified in the United
States.
The Golden Mushroom's hall walls
are studded from top to bottom with
awards galore ... It received more culi-
nary honors and acclaim than just
about any other restaurant in
Michigan.
Reid will continue to dO catering at
the Ambassador Hotel (former
Michigan Inn) and St. John's Banquet
and Conference Center, both in
Southfield .... Also off-premises events
at the location of choice by folks ...
His catering operation will be known
as Golden Mushroom Catering Inc.
CALL COMES ASKING if Marvin
Yagoda at Marvelous Marvin's
Mechanical Museum still has an
Excuse Booth to rent out among his
multitude of machines.
Before his popular museum that free-
stands in the rear of Loemann's on
Orchard Lake Road, south of 14 Mile, it
was at Marvin's former Tally Hall spot.
If he can find a modern version of
the fun mechanism, Marvin may have
it again.
The fun machine was something
else ... a lot of laughs ... Like calling
your boss and saying, "You're not
going to believe this but I'm pinned
down in a heavy fire-fight" ... as back-
ground noise sounds had bullets whin-
ing, the scream of jet fighters, boom of
artillery, etc.
Or more conveniently, "I'll be a lit-
tle late getting home, dear. I'm tied up
in a nasty traffic jam" ... while the
background sounds were of horns
honking, engines revving, etc.
It was a custom pay telephone booth
offering the choice of 14 two-minute
taped background sounds to enhance
