FINE CHINESE DINING

nivue,s, Tau, - 6■Ci/
"A wonderful adventure in fine dining" — Danny Raskin

Baron has a very
intricate process for
completing his scripts.
After deciding on a
project, he does six
weeks of research, talk-
ing to people who will
be like the characters
he plans fOr the play. Jeff Baron
Because Visiting Mr.
Green has an elderly
Jewish man, Baron called a lot of his
senior relatives and visited residents at
the Jewish Horne for the Aged in New
York City.
Baron then writes detailed biogra-
phies of his imaginary characters, •
knowing a lot more about them than
what eventually goes into a play. He
also does make-believe interviews with -
the characters, writing questions as
himself and answering them as the
characters would.
An outline guides his final version.
"When I finally get to the writing, it
tends to go quite smoothly in a six-
week process," Baron says. "My
favorite place to write these days is the
main reading room at the New York
Public Library. I like having other peo-
ple around as I write by hand."
Baron tries to create regular people
so that audiences can easily identi
with them.
His second play, Mother's Day, about
family members trying to get along,
has been performed at the BoarsHead
Theater in Lansing and starred Evelyn
Orbach, JET artistic director.
His new play, Mr. and Mrs. G, is
about monogamy.
"Everything I write is a mixture of
comedy and drama," says Baron, win-
ner of the KulturPreis Europa 2001
and the Intega Prize for Best Play in
Germany in 2002.
"Visiting Mr. Green has brought a lot
of nachas to me and my family." Fl
