Three Stooges Story, which tells the
history of the Stooges and contains
rare interviews.
In 1960's Exodus (MGM), Paul
Newman, Eva Marie Saint, Lee J.
Cobb and Sal Mineo lead a strong cast
in director Otto Preminger's 220-
minute film version of Leon Uris'
novel about the struggle to establish
the State of Israel.
Also set in Israel is 1966's Cast a
Giant Shadow (MGM), starring Kirk
Douglas as Colonel Mickey Marcus,
the American soldier who served as an
adviser to Israel in 1948 and must
decide whether to settle into peace-
time America or follow his more natu-
ral combative instincts abroad.
Time of Favor (Kino Home Video)
is 2000's taut thriller about the tense
relationship between Orthodox
nationalists and the military in con-
temporary Israel. A plot to blow up
the Dome of the Rock is instigated ,
among three naive, good-natured
Israel Defense Forces soldiers by a fer-
vently Orthodox settler rabbi who
claims he seeks to hasten the arrival of
the Messiah.
Stolen Summer (Buena Vista Home
Entertainment) is the first entry in
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's Project
Greenlight series.
In this 2001 film, Kevin Pollak is
warm, convincing and passionate as a
rabbi in 1976 Chicago. His beliefs are
tested when his son, dying of
leukemia, develops a close friendship
with a local Catholic boy who con-
cludes-that converting his Jewish friend
to Christianity is the dying boy's ticket
to heaven. The fine cast includes Aidan
Quinn, Bonnie Hunt, Brian Dennehy
and Eddie Kaye Thomas.
The 1921 feature The Golem, also
from Kino, tells the classic Jewish
story of the creature brought to life
from clay to protect the inhabitants of
a medieval Jewish community.
The DVD is part of an impressive
four-DVD set of German horror clas-
sics that includes Nosferatu, The
Cabinet of Dr. Cali gari and Waxworks.
