community took a pass." It's primary
concern, he said, was "ensuring Jewish
survival, not with challenging evil."
To a great extent, South Africa's
Jewish establishment refused to take
sides in the war against apartheid and
shunned the Jewish activists — most
of whom never had ties to the formal
community.
Some of the leaders for social justice
in the country — like the courageous
Helen Leiberman, who built schools
and community programs in the
townships — were warned by Jewish
leaders that their activities were harm-
ful to the Jewish community.
But following the establishment of a
democratic South Africa in 1994, the
Jewish community quickly sought to
embrace those same activists, hailing
them as exemplars of Jewish virtues
and values.
That haste in claiming credit pro-
duced what Dennis Davis, a Jewish
judge on the nation's second highest
court, called a "wonderful irony."
When those same human-rights
activists began criticizing Israel's treat-
ment of Palestinians and supporting
Palestinian statehood, Jewish commu-
nity leaders quickly disowned their
recently embraced brethren.
During the apartheid years, Jews
felt powerless and feared that by
speaking out they, too, could become
victims, said Howard Sackstein, a
Johannesburg Jewish community
activist. Today, in a free South Africa
they keep a low profile because of
their government's hostility toward
Israel, he added.
The Jewish community has failed to
reach out beyond its own ranks to
involve the wider South African pop-
ulation to engage in and understand
its events, notably occasions like Yom
HaShoah, the Holocaust memorial,
Sackstein said.
This has contributed to the Jewish
claustrophobia, even at a time when
religious and communal institutions
like day schools, synagogues and
social clubs appear to be thriving.
The future of South Africa's Jewish
community hinges largely on the
direction this nation takes in its great
experiment in democracy that is bare-
ly eight years old. It can become
another Zimbabwe, its northern
neighbor, that will plunder its vast
resources, destroy its economy and
drive out the white population, or it
can fulfill the vision of Nelson
Mandela and become a colorblind
and prosperous democracy.
