Contents A 2002 Michigan Press Association General Excellence winner www.detroitjewishnews.com Friday, Nov. 29, 2002 Kislev 24, 5763 Vol. CXXII, No. 16 Chappy Chanukah! T he annual Jewish News Chanukah Art Contest is a delightful way to begin the Chanukah holiday. We always look forward to seeing the work of hun- dreds of talented young artists and we work dili- gently to select a repre- sentative sampling of the great art for this Chanukah issue. You can find the best of the best on the cover _ of this issue and beginning on page 64 inside. One of our favorite . activities throughout the year is working . with this con- test. It isn't only Chanukah Art fun for the com- munity. There Contest Winners are several JN staffers who have volunteered for many years to help select the winning artists. This year's judges included Dharlene Norris, Esther Tschirhart, Erin Huf, Alison Blau and Alex Lumelsky. It is always a thrill to inform the win- ners and their families that they have been selected, and to interview the grand-prize winner whose work appears on the cover of the Jewish News. This year's winner, 10-year-old Rena Molnar of West Bloomfield, is no exception. A bright young lady who loves to draw, Rena was surprised to learn that she had won. She thought several of her class- mates at Congregation Shir Tikvah in Troy had created better entries. But our judges disagree. We hope the beautiful art and bright faces displayed in this issue from throughout metropolitan Detroit — and beyond — will begin your holiday with a smile. - This Week Community 16 Fate Uncertain 37 A Sliver Of Hope Plan to close Shaarey Zedek Southfield nursery school challenged. A Candle For Peace ne of the miracles of the modern State of Israel, born 54'/2 years ago in the shadows of the Holocaust, is its survival against con- stant aggression. With Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, beginning tonight, let each of us light a candle not only to commemorate the Jewish rededica- tion of the Temple in 165 BCE after the Assyrian-Greeks defiled the sanc- tuary, but also secure the future of Israel. May the collective candlepower burn away the lies, hatred and terror thrust upon Israelis by Islamic extremists who won't rest until the Jewish homeland is destroyed. As American Jews, we must never let down our guard on behalf of our Israeli brethren. Please have them in your hearts as you commemorate the holiday that marks our people's fight for religious freedom. Shabbat shalom and Chanukah sameiach! 0 Robert A.
