With his last words, which pro-
claimed his Jewishness, Daniel Pearl
meant to tell his Islamic extremist
killers that he respected Islam and
wanted their respect in return, Judea.
Pearl said.
By telling his killers that his great-
grandfather, Chaim Pearl, helped
build the Israeli city of B'nei Brak,
Daniel meant to convey his culture's
esteem for building life, not destroy-
ing it, Judea Pearl said.

Homeland Security
Department Created

Washington/JTA — The newly creat-
ed U.S. Homeland Security Depart-
ment will include an office of inter-
national affairs to coordinate security
measures with foreign countries,
including Israel.
The office will coordinate informa-
tion exchanges, joint training exercis-
es and technology sharing with
friendly nations.
Israeli officials met frequently with
lawmakers during the past year to
ensure that the international affairs
office would be part of the new
department.
Tom Ridge, currently the director
of the White House's Office of
Homeland Security, has been nomi-
nated to head the new department.

Rabbi Is Spared
Death Sentence

New York/JTA — A New Jersey jury
spared Rabbi Fred Neulander the
death penalty for hiring two men to
kill his wife.
At a hearing, Rabbi Neulander
cited the Book of Genesis in acknowl-
edging that his actions were "repre-
hensible and disgraceful." He also
said he would promote literacy in
prison.
Rabbi Neulander was convicted
Nov. 24 of murder and conspiracy to
commit murder in the death of his
wife, Carol.
His formal sentencing, at which
the judge will give him a jail term of
30 years to life in prison without the
possibility of parole, is scheduled for
Jan. 16.
